چکیده

The paper proposes a novel approach to the classification of compressed videos containing dynamic textures. The term dynamic texture is usually used with reference to image sequences of various natural processes that exhibit stochastic dynamics (e.g., water, fire and windblown vegetation). Description and recognition of dynamic textures have attracted growing attention. Although one of the most important prospective applications of the technology is content-based video retrieval, recognition of dynamic textures for compressed video has not been considered. The content of video and dynamic textures in particular, profoundly affect the performance of video compression algorithms. The prominence of compression artifacts can, therefore, be used to recognize dynamic textures in compressed videos. In the paper, we show how features, previously proposed for quality assessment, statistical analysis and a soft computing technique (neural networks) can be used to discern 23 different classes of dynamic textures in a standard video database, with 99.5% accuracy.

Compression Artifact Reduction with Adaptive Bilateral Filtering

In this paper, we present a spatially adaptive method to reduce compression artifacts observed in block discrete cosine transform (DCT) based image/video compression standards. The method is based on the bilateral filter, which is very effective in denoising images without smoothing edges. When applied to reduce compression artifacts, the parameters of the bilateral filter should be chosen care...

A Psychophysical Evaluation of Texture Compression Masking Effects

Lossy texture compression is increasingly used to reduce GPU memory and bandwidth consumption. However, as raised by recent studies, evaluating the quality of compressed textures is a difficult problem. Indeed using Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) on texture images, like done in most applications, may not be a correct way to proceed. In particular, there is evidence that masking effects apply...

Chordlength Texturing of Spline Surfaces

This article presents an inexpensive approach to provide (s,t) texture coordinates of a spline surface that mitigates texture compression and stretching artifacts. It employs a chordlength approximation based on the original spline surface parameterization.

Phase Based Modeling of Dynamic Textures and its Applications

Temporal or dynamic textures (DT’s) are video sequences that are spatially repetitive and temporally stationary. DT’s are temporal analogs of the more common spatial texture. Examples of DT’s include moving water, foliage, smoke, clouds, etc. This paper presents a model of spatiotemporal variations of frames in a DT sequence. Most recent work on DT modeling represents these frames as the respon...

Improving Rotation Invariance of the Volume Local Binary Pattern Operator

Dynamic texture is an extension of texture to the temporal domain. Recently, a powerful method for dynamic texture recognition based on volume local binary patterns (VLBP) was proposed. In this paper, we investigate improvements of the original VLBP operator. A proof on the relation of the two rotation invariant VLBP patterns is given. Methods for obtaining rotation invariance are experimentall...
